Two black and white goats eating hay
The weather has turned from somewhat wet and warm to rather wet and cold. The horses have been rugged up just like the goats. The rodent infestation has become noticeable, so we started putting up more traps on top of the traps and bait stations we already had.
Closeup of brown
It’s so nice to get outside between rain break. The weather has been warming up over the the last days and we are getting 20 deg during the day.
Closeup view of a frizzle hen sitting in a wooden nisting box
Contrary to Honky, our frizzle hen Fluffy has been broody for several weeks and been sitting on no eggs – chicken brains are funny. So we decided we give it a go and shoved the three duck eggs under her. She’s been a happy chicken now for two weeks and very protective on top.
House with paddock, fence and horses in background
The weather has not been too amazing over the last couple of weeks.
Jolan with two new baby chicks on her arms
This year we got two little baby choocks instead of calves.
Battery and our free range eggs in comparison
Fascinating to see the difference in eggs when I put some of ours into the egg carton too. Keep in mind that our chicken are mostly ex-battery hens that once used to produce those cage eggs. They were not considered good and productive enough for the batteries and hence would have been culled if we had not taken them.
Some closeups of our ex battery hens. It took them a few months to grow all their feathers back but now they are happy as Larry. They still believe they are pets and they love to come in and say hello – or rather eat up the cat food. The cat cannot stand them. I wonder why…
