View into the valley with lots of fog on the ground, only hills and trees sticking out.
The days have become short and cold, with some frosty mornings. Luckily, so far winter has not been as wet as last years.
A wooden box (trap) with label next to a tree stump in the grass.
Pukeatua farmstay has 12 traps spread around the buildings and the paddocks. Every 2nd day they need checking for any caught rats or hedgehogs.
Momma duck with her little ducklings
Apart from the usual winter farm activities, there has not been much exciting stuff happening. It’s been a typical winter with lots of rain, lots of mud but rather warm in comparison. It looks like nature has decided that it is spring.
Bunch of little brown ducklings on brick steps outside
The little ducklings have grown over the last couple of days and become so docile, or should I rather say they’ve sussed out where the food comes from….

If not doing office work, we fix fences, move animals around, collect, cut and chop firewood, dig trenches, build goat houses ;-) and fix all sorts of things that break over time.
piece of paper with some feathers and ink bottle we used.
We created quills out of some duck feathers. They have the big advantage that the quill is actually pretty long already. Still not long enough to actually handle them properly though. Shaved some of the vane off and it was much better.
Eastern Rosella on the fence line
After being rather busy over the last week before Christmas with a film crew on site and the typical “everything needs to be finished by Christmas” work frantic, we are now all truly in holiday mode. All at Pukeatua Farmstay wishing you a lovely and relaxed time and a Happy New 2021. May it bring prosperity and happiness.
Nothing much really has happened over the last few weeks and hence our updates have been rather sparse. One thing did happen however: Think it really turned spring.
Two hybrid mallard/grey ducks on the house roof
It’s that time of the year again where the cats and dogs in the neighbourhood start bringing in little chicks and ducklings. While a few of last year’s rescue ducks have returned sporadically throughout the year, they now seem to be returning in larger numbers and bringing their boy friends along.
A fluffy tomcat sneaking across the grass towards two phesants.
Found some Rosellas and Mr Naughty was over at the neighbour’s and was thinking what to do with the pheasants but decided quickly to let them be and carry on.
Green parrot-like bird with red head on a timber balustrade
Sometimes we have pretty little visitors, like those rosellas, parakeets or phesants. Today some rosellas flew by and landed on the deck balustrade.
House with paddock, fence and horses in background
The weather has not been too amazing over the last couple of weeks.
