Today was a sad day at Pukeatua Farmstay. We had to say goodbye to Peekie, our female Buff Orpington Duck. She was all well last night and this morning we found her in a corner of the duck run. She must have died overnight.
Ziggy the cat went missing Sunday night and returned Monday morning injured. After emergency surgery at Vets North Kumeu, she’s now recovering safely at home.
Silver gave birth to 3 beautiful kittens very early on Saturday morning, so yesterday was a very slow day here on our little farm after a very short night with Ms Silver’s new arrivals.
Another storm has been announced last night, so early this morning we finished the horse shelter area and moved the two boys over so they are going to have a more comfortable place during the day when the weather closes in.
The storm that hit us last Tuesday evening with wind speeds of more than 200km/h (Manukau Heads) left us without power and internet and only limited cell phone coverage. Power was restored yesterday afternoon, 3 days later.
the amount of rain we had over the last few days is extraordinary – at least on a subjective level. The occasional hours of sunshine in between evaporate the water quickly, hence yesterday we had 30 deg C. with 80% relative humidity.
I have been listening to that cow in distress now since yesterday afternoon, all night through and had a walk down the valley this morning to make sure it wasn’t ours.
