The warm and humid weather produced lovely field mushrooms to be harvested. Earlier we harvested basil, limes and potatoes.

Summer’s dry spell brings the perfect opportunity for essential farm maintenance – from clearing drains and grading driveways to moving logs and managing stockpiled materials.

Lots and not so much happened. New ducklings, alpaca maintenance, Christmas, holidays and lots of animal fun.

It’s been a few rather wet days. Some with intermittent sunshine but not enough to dry up the ground yet. The cats use the sunny breaks to go outside but other than that they seem to be in hibernation.

Our 2 little baby goats are called Muddy Valley Twi and Muddy Valley La. They love bouncing around in their paddock and up onto the things in their playground.

I picked a few pictures to keep you entertained and maybe – once we are out of lockdown – you may want to drop by for a stay and enjoy some time off. We will be opening in level 2.

If not doing office work, we fix fences, move animals around, collect, cut and chop firewood, dig trenches, build goat houses 😉 and fix all sorts of things that break over time.

Saturday was the day of the bi-annual alpaca maintenance

It’s been quite some time since our fluffy alpacas have been up in the paddock. Down in the valley we hardly see them but tomorrow will be time for the half-yearly maintenance, meaning drenching, vaccination and toenail clipping.

A few days ago there was finally a window with no rain and a bit of time, so managed to fill 4 feed bags with pine cones. Pine cones are excellent fire starters, full of resin and a rather large surface, thus burn really well,…

A walk on our local backyard beach, Muriwai Beach. Home to a gannet colony and lovely black sand with beautiful sunsets across the ocean.

We created quills out of some duck feathers. They have the big advantage that the quill is actually pretty long already. Still not long enough to actually handle them properly though. Shaved some of the vane off and it was much better.
