Paddock improvement work – part 1

New Zealand holiday season is here, looks like everyone has eft Auckland in a mass North-South exodus. We are still here and stay here, after all it’s nice here.

The break from work-work gives the chance to spend some more time on farm work. Like fixing fences.

The pretty bad electric tape only lasts a few years, so every few years it needs to be made new. This time we opted to invest some time into long term performance and added some high tensile wires to the mix with proper connectors.

The goats decided to be cheeky again and tested the electric fencing around the shrubs.

They found that the electricity did not work thanks to the old broken down tape.

And proceeded towards eating some juicy shrubs, while the humans were not really impressed.

Now the enclosure has been made new – and bigger.

Looks like the ducks have figured out that this is a safe haven from the pushy goats.

To be continued 🙂

The goats decided to go through the fenced off area with shrubs and decimate them. No good. Turns out, the poly wires were too old and did not work any more as they should.

A photomontage of 4 different wasp traps made from coke bottle hung up
We typically put a waap trap up around the house in summer to keep the number of wasps at bay. This year, they discovered a queen yellow legged hornet in the early stages of building a nest in Glenfield on the North Shore in October, while two males were spotted earlier in the year in Grafton and Albany. It is the first time a Queen has been found in Aotearoa.
Cows steaming in the cold air against the sunlight
There was nothing extraordinary to write about this winter, really. It’s not been too wet and not too dry, neither too cold or too warm. We had a few frosty nights and a few pretty rainy days but all in all it was reasonably warm and okay from a mud perspective.
The sun has been more prevalent and the odd shower has helped all plants to grow a lot. It’s nice to see so much fresh green in various shades
